Walter Flay Murray (August 25, 1938 - March 9, 2019)

Mr. Walter Flay Murray, 80, of Bostic, died Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills in Forest City.
Walter was the widower of Betty White Murray, his wife of 45 years, and the son of the late Paul Durham Murray and Agnes Green Murray. He was also preceded in death by a son, Horace Durham Murray, and a daughter, Sarah Alice Murray.
Walter was a 1956 graduate of Sunshine High School and the Nashville Auto Diesel School. He served two years in the United States Army where his proudest moment was standing guard as a member of the US Military Police for US President John F. Kennedy during a special presidential visit in November 1962 to Fort Stewart, Georgia.
Walter was a skilled metal machinist and welder who worked in the maintenance department at Aeroquip/Eaton Corporation in Forest City for more than twenty-five years prior his retirement. His previous work history included a nine-year stint at Spindale Mills in Spindale. His hobbies after retirement included restoring and discussing Allis-Chalmers tractors, making pencil drawings of old buildings, and playing Scrabble. He was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church and a former deacon at Bostic First Baptist Church.
Left to cherish Walter's memory are his son, David Bruce Murray of Ellenboro; his son-in-law and daughter, John and Naomi Murray Millwood of Bostic; his son and daughter-in-law, Philip E. and Lora Hoppes Murray of Ellenboro; five siblings, Louise Murray Gettys of Hollis, Lester Wayne Murray of Mooresboro, Eunice Murray Hoppes of Bostic, Ruth Murray Arrowood of Bostic, and Betty Murray Smith of Bostic; his special friend, Peggy Owens Murray of Bostic; one grandson, Gideon Wayne Millwood; one granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Millwood; one step-granddaughter, Katie McFarland; and several more children not directly related who lovingly called him "PawPaw."
The Funeral will be conducted at 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. The Rev. Paul White, Jr. and Philip Murray will officiate. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers are George Gettys, Calvin Gettys, Donald Murray, Darryl Murray, Wayne Murray, and David Robbins.
The Visitation will be from 6 pm until 8 pm Monday at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.
