Susan Cline Hollifield, 69

July 26, 1950 — June 25, 2020

Susan Cline Hollifield, 69

“If I die before you, I don’t want a big bother made over me,” was a humble instruction Susie gave her husband, Dwight M. Hollifield, many times.  She further requested that she only have a simple, graveside service and be interred in the Hollifield Family Cemetery, near her home, beside the graves of her beloved boxers, where there is a sweeping view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Susie passed away on June 25, 2020 at age 69, and a graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, June 28, 2020, at the location she prescribed and loved dearly. The service will be conducted by Rev. David Hawkins.  Among those who loved her profoundly and will fiercely miss her are her husband, Dwight; her children, Jason C. Hollifield (Rhonda) and Erin Hollifield Balmer (Jason); her grandchildren Adam and Ben Hollifield and Lily and Brooke Balmer; her brother Jack Cline (Linda); and her boxer Bocephus (“Bo”). Susie was predeceased by her parents, Clyde and Bertha Cline of Hickory, NC; brothers Tom and Dan Cline; and sister Lana Cline Hartshorn.
Susie was a teller at Northwestern Bank until the birth of her son in 1970.  She and Dwight decided being a fulltime mom was infinitely more important to them than being a banker, so she became a homemaker.  At this profession and as a mom, she excelled.  In 1980, at the coaxing of friends who owned Piney Ridge Nursery, she began working a few hours a day, taking care not to let the work infringe on being home when Jason and Erin went to school each morning, returned home in the afternoons, or had days off from school, including summer vacation months. She continued this schedule at Piney Ridge for almost 20 years before deciding to again become a fulltime homemaker.
As a faithful member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, Susie was a tireless worker. She taught the children’s Sunday school class for many years; she served on the Cemetery Committee, Administrative Council, Parsonage Committee and Visitation Committee.  She participated in virtually all church functions that required the preparation and serving of meals and, together with her dear friend Mary Hollifield, cleaned the church fellowship hall weekly for more than fifteen years.
In lieu of flowers, it is Susie’s wish that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (https://www.stjude.org) or Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.
Washburn & Dorsey Funeral and Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.
