Paul Jake Toney, 88, of Bostic, died Thursday, March 7, 2024.
He was the widower of Imogene Lovelace Toney, and a son of the late John Henry Toney and Mallie Mae McCurry Toney. He was also preceded in death by siblings, Jack Toney, Daisy Toney, Zora Belle Randall and Sue Brooks. Paul was longtime sheriff's deputy and animal control officer with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department, having served for over 20 years and rose to the rank of Lieutenant. He was the director of Animal Control and served on the Animal Control Board for the State of North Carolina. He served on the Cherry Mountain Fire Department Board of Directors and was a past member of the Bostic Fire Department. He had served as Youth Sunday School Teacher for Golden Valley UMC and was a member of the Jaycee's and Ruritan. He was a school bus driver for Rutherford County Schools; served as a security guard for the building of the Highway 74 bypass and at the Monroe Music Festival; and organized a circus in the 1980's that included participation of students from the Rutherford County Schools. Paul was the owner/operator of the Golden Valley Music Park; the Golden Hill Pet Cemetery; Toney's Used Furniture; and worked at PPG for awhile.
He is survived by his daughters, Cathy Hollifield and her husband Andy, of Bostic, and Deb Toney of Bostic; a granddaughter, Kristin Mae Hollifield; a grand/great granddaughter, Mallie Emma Toney; and a special granddaughter, Logan Amaya.
The Funeral will be conducted at 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at Sunshine Church. The Rev. Sam Henderson and Rev. Ricky Poteat will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Rutherford County Sheriff's Department Honor Guard will serve during visitation hours and prior to the service. Active Pallbearers are Danny Brooks, Casey Brooks, Matt McDaniel, Shannon Hoppes, Bobby Dotson, and Roger Hollifield. Honorary Pallbearers are Eddie Burgess, Rusty Collins, Norman Murray, Johnny McCurry, and Clarence Simmons.
The Visitation will be from 5 pm until 7 pm Monday at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home.
