Helen Smawley, 100

Helen Smawley, 100, of Shelby, died Saturday, October 22, 2022.

She was the daughter of the late Herman and Vernie Grayson Smawley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, William and Edwin Smawley; a sister, Ann Bone; a niece, Rhonda Robinson; a nephew, Harold Smawley; and a great nephew, Mark Carroll. After high school, Helen worked for the State of North Carolina Commission of the Blind operating canteens in a number of government buildings in Raleigh, High Point, and Charlotte. She was a very religious person and attended church regularly until she was physically unable to do so. Through her church and work she made a lot of life long friends whom she loved very much.

She is survived by her nephew Wayne Smawley of Morganton; her nieces, Raye Womack of Charlotte and Doris Causby of Glen Alpine; there are 9 great nieces and nephews; and a number of great great nieces and nephews.

The Funeral will be conducted at 11:00 am Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at Golden Valley Church. The Rev. Ted Easter, Jr. and Rev. Jim Rice will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:15 am until 11:00 am Wednesday at the church prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street NW, Lenoir, NC 28645 or Immanuel Baptist Church, 2224 South Post Road, Shelby, NC 28152.

The family would like to thank from the bottom of their hearts the people who cared for Helen at The Berkely in Morganton, and Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.
