Mr. W. Henry Edwards, 94, of Rutherfordton, died Saturday, November 17, 2018, at the Charles George VA Medical Center hospice. He was born in Cliffside where his parents and extended family lived, worked, and thrived. He graduated from Cliffside High School and entered Brevard College. World War 2 interrupted his formal education when he joined the United States Coast Guard in 1942, being stationed at Ocean City, MD, for coastal patrol on foot and horseback. Later he served as signalman on the patrol frigate USS Grand Island in Pacific Ocean operations. After honorable discharge in 1946, he joined his uncle's business of securing automobile tags and titles in Washington, D.C.
His marriage of 70 years began on June 4, 1948, to 1Edith Lee Roby, who survives him. He is also survived by son Duncan and wife Mary, daughter Caroline and husband Greg, grandsons Stuart Beam and wife Natalie plus Will Beam and wife Hannah. His parents Clyde and Maude, brother Alton, and sister Doris predeceased him.
Henry was a farmer. He spent childhood summers on his grandfather Will Duncan's farm during the 1920s and 1930s, and moved there with his family in 1960. Dairy farming, fence building, silage cutting, hay making, vegetable growing, timber harvesting were regular activities. He initiated pasture grazing and eliminated silage for his dairy cows. He and Edith learned and taught uses of kudzu for livestock, crafts, and food. For years he enjoyed producing many sweet corn crops eaten by eager friends. He participated in community activities as member of the Methodist Church, American Legion, Farm Bureau, Soil & Water Conservation, Cliffside Masonic Lodge, and neighborhood ice cream socials with abundant chocolate. He was longtime employee of Washburn Funeral Home and later Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home.
The Funeral will be conducted at 2:00 pm Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church in Rutherfordton. Burial will follow in the Wesley Chapel UMC Cemetery.
The Visitation will be 12:30 pm until 1:45 pm Wednesday, November 28, 2018, in the church fellowship hall.
Henry and his family suggest that in lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Cliffside Masonic Lodge #460, PO Box 164, Cliffside, NC 28024.

Edith and Caroline and Family, I'm greatly sadden to learn of the passing of Henry. He was truly a delightful man and so full of knowledge and wisdom and so knowledgeable on the history of Rutherford County and farming. I loved listening to him just talking about all these subjects Henry was a very very interesting man and what a interesting successful life he had and marriage. The world is a little darker now because of his passing he will be missed. May his memory be eternal, the family is in my thoughts and prayers

We will always miss Henry and his distinguished look around the funeral home. It takes a dedicated soul to pour the time and energy into services and miss birthday get togethers, holidays, and other functions because of a service.
He was very dedicated to Washburn's and he and Edward had a great friendship. All of our staff who were fortunate enough to work with Henry are better for having that privilege.
My favorite memory of Henry was his laughter upon arriving at work one day, we had moved into the new building several months before - but he got something on his mind and drove to the old funeral home, and he couldn't wait to tell us and we had kidded him about it for years...

Edith, Caroline, Duncan and family,

We are so sorry for your loss. Memories came back to me as I think of Mr. Edwards involving farming, my dad talking about Henry Edwards all the time, and times as a child playing in his barn and in and out of your farm house. We all shared a love of farming and the natural way of living and Mr. Edwards and your family have always been special to our family. He was a gentle spirit and always kind to all of those around him. He will be missed....

Love and Concern for all of you from Butch and Karen Moore and Reba Lowe

Dearest Edith, Mary, Duncan and extended family...

Our deepest sympathies. We will always fondly remember Henry, the water wheel, the stream, and the many attempts to push water up the hill across the street. What a grand time we all had on that very hot summer day.

May he rest in peace.

Edith & Family

I would like to offer my sincere condolences. Henry was a fine man.
I will always remember Henry for being so kind to invite me to go bear hunting at Mount Mitchell with he and W. B. Roberson. I felt special to be invited. They were quite a pair. Henry would always pick up Mr. Roberson when he could no longer drive at 5:00 A M or before so they could be on the mountain when the hunt started and they turned the dogs loose on a bear track.
