Velma Sisk Dobbins, 91, of Raleigh passed away peacefully on November 7th at Sunrise of North Hills.
She was born in Forest City on March 3, 1922 to the late Daisy and Archibald Sisk. She was born with her identical twin, Selma who recently passed. A long time resident of Raleigh and Forest City, Velma was active in her church, worked at the church preschool, and loved to sew, cook, and sing. She could be seen driving around town with a bumper sticker that said, "Caution: Driver Singing". She possessed a wicked sense of humor, a great love of children, and being fiercely protective of her family. Perhaps her greatest accomplishment was her 69 year marriage to C.P. "Joe" Dobbins who predeceased her. Also preceding in her in death are her daughters Teresa Crotts and Vaneda Hess; twin sister Selma, parents and all other siblings.
She is survived by her son, Steve Dobbins and wife Lynda of Charlotte; and her daughter Jo Ann Mangum and her husband Tom, of Raleigh; sons in law Bud Crotts of Ellenboro, and Don Hess of Raleigh; there are five grandchildren, Nikki Scruggs and her husband Chad of Union Mills, Heather Pope of Wake Forest, August May of Charlotte, Matt Crotts and wife Danette of Belwood, and Ashley Dobbins of Charlotte; there are seven great grandchildren, Cait'Lynn Crotts Austin Pope, Audrey Scruggs, Cameron Pope, Logan Scruggs, Ella May and Cooper Scruggs.
A Graveside Service will be conducted at 3:00 pm Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery. Rev. David Hawkins will officiate.
Friends may call from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm Sunday at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral and Cremation Service.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sunrise at North Hills for their kindness, professionalism, and their service to our mother, also thanks to Donna Smith, RN and Hospice of Wake County.
Memorials may be made to Wake County Hospice, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.

Steve and Linda,

Our hearts go out to you at this time..... Steve, your mother has a wonderful smile and knowing she grew up in Forest City tells me she had a wonderful upbringing. I lost my mother in July and I think about her and talk to her each day. I know Steve, that when you're flying..... you're just a little closer to her then you are on the ground.

Our prayers are with you.

We have never met, but was sorry to learn of your mother's passing. She taught at MUMPS when my oldest son, Bryan, was in preschool 28 years ago. She was so great with the children and loved by parents and children alike. I can still see her singing with the children. I found her to be a comfort for a new young mother, as I was, at that time.
Sincerely,
Marie Dixon
